Art Workshops
HB Youths art workshops are designed to engage young people in art and crafts in ways they may not have done before, using art as a tool to engage them in deeper learning. While some workshops are about skill building and art techniques, others use art to open conversations about wellness, the environment, politics and more, these can be linked to our other workshops or delivered as stand alone sessions.
About delivery
Our art sessions are designed and delivered by a practising artist. Helen studied Art and Design for 4 years and graduated with a foundation degree from Manchester Metropolitan University in Art and Design: Fashion and garment construction. After graduating Helen owned a small boutique in Manchesters Iconic Afflecks, selling handmade and vintage clothing. After volunteering at Manchester Youth Zone, she fell in love with Youth work and changed careers to working with young people. She delivered one to one art sessions as a support worker for Music for young people, working with young offenders and young people unable to access mainstream education. Helen then became an Art Worker at Mahdlo youth zone where she delivered art sessions for 4 years. While her passion is youth work, Helen still makes art in her spare time, while she typically creates water colour pet portraits, as shown here, she also loves trying new things and learning new skills.

In this session young people will receive a brief overview of the history of zines and see some examples of different zines.
We will then discuss and mind map ideas for their zines. They will be encouraged to consider how zines have been used as an outlet for unheard voices when traditional media has ignored marginalised people.
Each young person will create their own zine to take home using a range of upcycled and new elements. A separate zine will be created which uses elements of all the young peoples creations, this will then be printed and provided to the organisation. 10 copies are provided as standard and organisation are welcome to reproduce and distribute this to their members and supporters.

This session explores different art techniques and provides a mini tutorial on a few different options. We then look at waste items that would typically be thrown away and consider how to epicycle them in to a piece of art using the techniques we have learned. Each young person will create a unique piece of art they can take home and will also contribute to a collaborative piece that can be displayed at your organisation
